Former Mexican beauty queen Carolina Flores Gomez has died after she was found shot inside her luxury apartment. She was 27.

Gomez was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head at her home in the Miguel Hidalgo district of Mexico City on April 15, according to local outlet Reporte Indigo.

Authorities believe she was killed a day before her body was discovered, leading to suspicions about why her husband, Alejandro Gomez, took so long to call emergency services. According to the outlet, police believe Alejandro and his mother, Erika Maria, were home at the time of Carolina’s murder.

Maria is the prime suspect, according to the report.

Building staff did not report hearing gunshots or witnessing any unusual activity at the apartment complex prior to the beauty queen’s untimely death. Forensic teams have reportedly searched the apartment for evidence.

Marina del Pilar Avila, the governor of Mexico’s Baja California state, called for an urgent investigation amid the ongoing femicide crisis in the country. Approximately 10 women a day are murdered in Mexico, with one percent resulting in sentencing, The New York Post reported. Advocates have demanded that Carolina’s death be treated as a femicide.

“No crime against a woman should go unpunished,” Avila told reporters. “Our thoughts are with her family during this devastating time.”

An investigation into Carolina’s death has been launched, according to the Mexico City prosecutor’s office.

Carolina won Miss Teen Universe for Baja California in 2017. The model and influencer also earned several local titles in her hometown of Ensenada, a port city located on the Pacific coast.

Carolina’s death comes after a string of other pageant queen deaths in recent months. In November 2025, Raquel Escalante, who was named Miss Intercontinental Guatemala in 2021, died after a battle with cervical cancer. She was 28.

“Her charisma, her joy and that special light that always accompanied her made every moment by her side something unique and memorable,” local outlet TV Aztec Guate wrote via Instagram at the time. “Today we bid farewell to a colleague and friend who left a huge imprint on our hearts. Her smile, her energy and her passion for communicating will continue to inspire us every day.”

In September 2025, former Miss Universe Jamaica Tyra Spaulding was found dead in her apartment, according to Caribbean National Weekly. Police investigated her death as a possible suicide.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of the beautiful Tyra Spaulding. 🕊️💙,” read a statement shared via Instagram by the Miss Universe Jamaica organization. “She had a smile that lit up every room, bringing warmth and joy to all who had the privilege of knowing her. We at the Miss Universe Jamaica Organization keep Tyra’s family, friends, and loved ones in our heartfelt prayers as we celebrate the beautiful life she shared with us.”
