Authorities in Connecticut claim a daycare worker inappropriately touched a 4-year-old boy, leading to his arrest.

A Connecticut State Police official confirmed to Us Weekly that Jan Carlos Berrios Otero was arrested late last month on fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child charges.

Berrios Otero, 29, had been working at a daycare in the wealthy enclave of Avon, a suburb of Hartford, the capital.

The state police official confirmed reports Berrios Otero was accused of touching the boy’s private parts during nap time on March 30 at BrightPath Daycare.

The alleged sexual assault was reported to the daycare the following day when the parents showed up to complain about Berrios Otero.

Daycare staff later reviewed surveillance footage from the classroom that appears to show Berrios Otero lying next to the child during nap time with a blanket covering both of their lower halves.

Berrios Otero can allegedly be seen in the footage moving his hand beneath the blanket for a 47-minute stretch.

He is also accused of kissing the boy’s face, hands, and upper body.

According to state cops, the footage also appears to show Berrios Otero placing a cell phone under the blanket, but it was unclear for what purpose.

Berrios Otero was detained in Middletown on April 1, cops said.

After his arrest, Berrios Otero was fired from his job. “The safety and well-being of every child entrusted to our care is, and always will be, our highest priority,” the daycare’s owner said in a statement to WFSB.

Berrios Otero remains in jail on a $1,000,000 bond, according to records. He is due back in court on April 28.

BrightPath released a statement on Friday, April 17, regarding the incident. “BrightPath is aware that the arrest warrant for the former employee arrested on April 1, 2026, has been released,” read the statement obtained by WTNH.

“Our thoughts are with the children and their families who are navigating this difficult time. We remain focused on the well-being of the children at BrightPath Avon and on connecting families with resources and support. We will continue to cooperate with law enforcement and the appropriate agencies in their ongoing investigations. Anyone with information that may be relevant is encouraged to contact the Avon Police Detective Division at 860-409-4230.”

WFSB is reporting that the family of a 3-year-old boy has filed a lawsuit against the daycare, claiming their child was sexually assaulted by Berrios Otero for several months in 2025 and 2026.

It was unclear if Connecticut State Police were aware of those additional allegations and were investigating them.
