A former TV news anchor has pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing her mother to death less than one year after the October 2025 killing in Kansas.
Prosecutors announced that Angelynn Mock pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on Friday, August 21, for the death of her 80-year-old mother, Anita Avers.
As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors have recommended that Mock, 48, be sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. In addition to pleading guilty, Mock agreed to pay any restitution and laboratory fees to the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center.
Her sentencing is scheduled to take place on October 5.
Years before the killing, Mock worked as a morning anchor and reporter for KTVI Fox 2 between March 2011 and February 2015.
Wichita police learned that Mock killed Avers when they responded to a residence on October 31, 2025, in response to a report of a stabbing. Mock lived at the home with her mother and stepfather.
After her stepfather left for work that morning, Mock stabbed her mother several times in her face, neck and arms with multiple different weapons. She then called 911 to report herself to authorities.
Avers was taken to a local hospital, where she was ultimately pronounced dead.
Mock’s stepdad spoke to police about the incident, and he revealed the defendant lost her job as an anchor at a local news station after she had an “explosive situation involving alcohol,” according to an affidavit viewed by Law & Crime.
The stepfather also shared that Mock and Avers had a “back-and-forth” relationship, but the mother-daughter duo were close.
After she was arrested, Mock allegedly made several concerning statements.
“I’d kill that bitch to have my mom back any day,” she allegedly said, per the outlet. “I don’t even know who she is anymore. I know, I believe she is the devil.”
Mock struggled with her mental health, and her stepfather revealed she was previously diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. He added that she previously spent time in a mental hospital, and would sometimes be in a delusional state in which she believed people were “robots.”
Before she entered her plea, a judge ruled that Mock had competency issues.
Judge Jeff Goering previously determined that Mock incompetent to proceed to trial in January, and he ordered that she be hospitalized for restoration of competency. However, Goering eventually declared that Mock was competent to proceed with the case in July.
