A former teacher in Louisiana who was previously named “New Teacher of the Year” in his district was arrested for his alleged involvement in a double shooting.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said that Kyle Delaney was arrested on Tuesday, September 15, following the shooting that took place around 5:30 p.m., according to WAFB.
Delaney, 25, has since been charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons and criminal damage to property, according to authorities.
Deputies reported to the scene on St. Vincent Street and found two injured men, who were taken to the hospital and are now in stable condition. Authorities said that one of the victims reportedly sustained a single gunshot wound, and the other victim was shot multiple times.
An investigation was launched into the shooting and detectives identified Delaney as a suspect. Detectives said that the former teacher arrived at the crime scene where he got out of his vehicle, and fired multiple shots in the direction of the victims before driving away.
Authorities found Delaney hours later at a home in Gonzales and he was arrested. He was then taken into custody at Ascension Parish Jail, where he remains behind bars while awaiting bond.
Delaney previously worked as a teacher at Gonzales Middle School, and the district’s website states that he was given the honor of New Teacher of the Year during the 2024-2025 school year.
Ascension Public Schools has since confirmed that he is no longer employed by the district following his arrest. School officials added that September 15 was the last day he was employed by the school.
The district also issued a statement following his arrest.
“As this is an active law enforcement matter, questions regarding the incident, arrest, or criminal charges should be directed to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, and we are unable to comment further on personnel matters,” the statement read, per the outlet.
Despite confirming his arrest, police have not revealed if Delaney had a motive in the shooting or if he knew the victims prior to the incident. The ages of the victims have also not been publicly revealed.
It’s not currently clear if Delaney has entered a plea or retained legal counsel following his arrest. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Us’ request for comment regarding updates in the case.
