An elementary school assistant principal in Texas was fatally shot inside of her home during an “accidental shooting,” and her husband has since been arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection to her death.

Officers responded to Lindsay Velasquez’s home around 7:30 p.m. on April 17 following a report that someone had been accidentally shot in the face, according to CBS Texas.

Upon their arrival, police found Lindsay, 42, unconscious with a gunshot wound. She was transported to Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth, where she later died, according to the outlet.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Lindsay worked as an assistant principal at Luella Merrett Elementary School in the Fort Worth Independent School District, according to CBS Texas and WFAA. She was in her second year of the role at the time of her death.

Following the fatal shooting, Lindsay’s husband, Alberto Velasquez, was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Alberto, 39, has since been released on bond, according to the Star-Telegram.

It is not currently clear if he has entered a plea or retained legal counsel.

Authorities have not publicly revealed details about what led to the shooting. However, police initially reported that they believed the shooting was “accidental.”

The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. The Benbrook Police Department did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment regarding the case.

Fort Worth ISD confirmed to CBS Texas that both Lindsay and Alberto were employed by the school district.

“Fort Worth ISD is aware of a tragic off-campus incident involving two district employees,” the school district said in the statement. “This situation did not occur on a Fort Worth ISD campus, and there is no ongoing threat to students or staff. We are deeply saddened by this loss, and our thoughts are with the family and all those impacted.”

Following Lindsay’s death, her loved ones set up a GoFundMe to support her family. The post revealed that she was the mother to three daughters.

“Lindsay had a rare and incredibly special way of making people feel truly seen and cared for,” the fundraiser post read. “The loss of Lindsay leaves a void that will be felt forever in the lives of those who loved her, especially her daughters, who now face a future without their mother’s presence, guidance, and unwavering love.”
