A man has been accused of killing his missing wife after investigators identified burned human remains as hers following her disappearance.
Gurinder Gill was arrested on Wednesday, October 14, in connection with Jasmine Gill’s disappearance, two weeks after Jasmine was last seen alive at their Sacramento home on September 30, according to authorities.
An investigation revealed Gurinder, 28, and Jasmine, 30, were in the process of getting a divorce and were involved in a child custody dispute ahead of her disappearance, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said in a Friday, October 16, news release.
Jasmine was reported missing by her cousin on October 4, according to the agency. She had been wearing a matching white pajama set with red polka dots before she vanished.
Gurinder claimed to detectives that Jasmine had been taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents while she checked the mail at their home, the sheriff’s office said.
However, ICE told detectives that agents hadn’t carried out any immigration enforcement activity at the Gills’ Sacramento residence, according to the sheriff’s office.
“As the investigation progressed, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office detectives identified several inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance,” the agency said in the news release.
The day after Jasmine was last seen, burned human remains were found in El Dorado County on October 1, according to authorities.
Further investigation revealed the remains belonged to Jasmine, the sheriff’s office said. The exact location of where her remains were discovered wasn’t specified.
After the remains were positively identified as Jasmine, an arrest warrant charging Gurinder with murder was issued, according to the agency, which executed two search warrants at homes associated with him.
Gurinder was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on murder charges, the sheriff’s office said. He isn’t eligible for bail.
He was arraigned on Friday, per The Sacramento Bee.
Information on whether he retained legal counsel wasn’t immediately available.
It’s currently unclear how Jasmine was killed, as the sheriff’s office didn’t specify the potential circumstances of her death.
