A New York man has been indicted in the killing of his 71-year-old mother, who prosecutors said he fatally beat and stabbed with a machete, axe and kitchen knife at their home.
Chester Green was also indicted on three counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon in connection with his mother Marian Green’s death on July 5, according to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office.
Chester, 27, pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment on Wednesday, October 14, the district attorney’s office said in a news release.
In a statement on his indictment, Westchester County District Attorney Susan Cacace called Marian’s death as a “horrific and senseless act of violence that has deeply shaken our community.”
“While nothing can undo this devastating loss, my office is committed to vigorously prosecuting this deeply disturbing case and pursuing justice for Mrs. Green and her loved ones,” Cacace said.
Chester is accused of attacking Marian with a machete, axe and knife at their Scarsdale home between July 5 and July 7, according to authorities.
Police discovered Marian dead the morning of July 7, when they responded to a reported disturbance, per WABC-TV.
Chester was arrested at the crime scene following the discovery of his mother’s body, authorities said.
Marian was a known advocate for individuals with special needs and the chair of the Scarsdale Advisory Council on People with Disabilities, the TV station reported.
“Marian was a longtime and active member of the Scarsdale community who devoted considerable time to a number of causes, including her service as Chair of the Advisory Council on People with Disabilities,” Scarsdale Mayor Justin Arest previously said in a statement, according to News 12 Long Island.
“She cared deeply about the issues she took on, and her loss was felt across the community,” the mayor added. “My thoughts remain with her family, friends and all those who knew her well.”
Court documents obtained by The Journal News revealed that police officers who arrived at the crime scene on July 7 encountered Chester outside the home, and that he reportedly told them he tried to die by suicide but didn’t mention his mother.
He spent a few days under police supervision at a hospital, where he discussed experiencing prior depression and psychotic episodes, court documents state, per the newspaper.
Chester’s next court date is set for December 2, according to the district attorney’s office.
