A mother in Michigan has been accused of allegedly trying to kill her 5-year-old daughter after the child was found severely injured in the woods behind their home.
Christina Kay Crow was arrested on Monday, April 20, and charged with one count of assault with intent to murder and one count of first-degree child abuse.
The investigation into the matter began on April 20 when deputies with the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office responded to Crow’s home for a welfare check on her, according to WPBN. It has not yet been revealed why the welfare check was requested or who contacted police about Crow’s wellbeing.
As authorities looked through Crow’s home, they grew concerned about the well-being of her young daughter and wondered where she was. However, police have not revealed what sparked the initial concern.
Investigators continued to search the area for about an hour and a half before they found Crow’s daughter in the woods behind their home. Officials said that the child sustained severe lacerations to her neck and face after she was allegedly attacked by her mother, according to the Benzie County Record Patriot.
The child was then rushed to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for treatment. She was later transferred to Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for more specialized treatment due to the severity of her injuries.
No further updates have been shared about the child’s health as of time of publication.
Crow, 40, was arrested at her home at the time officers discovered her daughter, and she was transported to Benzie County Jail. She appeared in Michigan’s 85th District Court for her arraignment hearing on Wednesday, April 22, where a judge ordered that she be held on a $1 million bond.
She is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on May 7. Meanwhile, a preliminary exam will take place one week later on May 14.
It is not currently clear if Crow has entered a plea or retained legal counsel following her arrest. The Benzie County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment regarding an update in the case.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing. However, authorities have not released any additional information regarding the case due to the victim’s young age. It has also not been revealed if anyone else lived at the home with Crow and her daughter.
