Tennessee Teacher Arrested After Allegedly Dragging a Nonverbal Student, 9, Across a Rug

A teacher in Tennessee has been arrested after she was accused of dragging a nonverbal student across a rug, which caused the minor to be injured and have a “blood red mark.”

Meg Day was arrested on April 16 and was charged with assault, according to McNairy County Sheriff’s Office records.

The arrest took place nearly a month after a McNairy County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to Selmer Elementary School in Selmer, Tennessee, on March 19 after two witnesses reported that an employee had attacked a child, according to WMC.

Day, 49, allegedly grabbed a nonverbal 9-year-old boy by the lower half of his body before she dragged him across a rug. Another employee reportedly saw the student reaching for his back, which was when they noticed he had a “blood red mark” on his body.

It was then determined that the student had gotten “carpet burn” from the incident, according to WREG. The school’s principal and assistant principal were then notified about the incident, and they called the police to report Day.

Day was eventually arrested for the crime, though court records indicate that she has since been released from jail.

It is not currently clear if Day has entered a plea or retained legal counsel. The McNairy County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to Us Weekly’s request for comment regarding the case.

Day’s arrest is not the first time the Tennessee school district has dealt with teachers allegedly acting inappropriately with students.

Just days before Day’s incident, an employee at Selmer Middle School — which is also within McNairy County School District — was arrested after she allegedly hit a 15-year-old student on the back of the head. Video reportedly caught Sequoia Ann Hively slapping the student on the school’s property, according to police.

Police have not shared what took place leading up to the alleged assault.

Following the incident, the student was reportedly checked by the nurse and it was concluded that he had no injuries.

The superintendent told the victim’s father that Hively, 65, would not return to work at the school as a lunch worker until the situation was resolved, according to WREG.

Hively has since been released from police custody. It is not currently clear if she has entered a plea or retained legal counsel following her arrest.

The investigations into both cases remain ongoing. Police are expected to share updates as more details in both Day and Hively’s cases are revealed.
