10 Delightful Things We Learned From Mariah Carey at TCA

It’s Mariah Carey’s world and we’re all just living in it. The pop superstar’s Television Critics Association press conference on Wednesday, August 3, for her upcoming docuseries, Mariah’s World, was truly one of a kind. She brought hunky shirtless men, champagne and a throne, of course.

The “Vision of Love” singer got her makeup touched up and sipped Veuve Clicquot while speaking to the crowd of TV critics and reporters about her eight-part E! series. The episodes will follow the songstress as she tours Europe, takes luxurious vacations and plans her upcoming wedding to James Packer.

Here are the 10 most delightful things Carey revealed during the best press conference of all time:

1. She doesn’t watch reality TV or even know what reality is.

“We call it more of a docuseries because it feels like a documentary. There’s no way I was like, ‘Ooh, let’s do some kind of reality thing.’ I don’t even watch reality,” the Grammy winner said. “I don’t even know what reality is. Literally. In terms of, like, real or not real.”

2. Her kids are so funny, they deserve their own show.

When asked how often her 5-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, will appear on Mariah’s World, she said she’s working it out with ex-husband Nick Cannon. “They could have their own show, because that’s how funny they are. It’s not because they’re my kids, but I just have to figure out — mutually figure it out with Nick and whatever — how much we want them in the show,” she said. “If I were an agent and I discovered them, I feel like I’d be like, ‘These kids need to be on TV.’”

3. American Idol was the worst.

“It was the most abusive experience. By the way, you’ve just driven me to drink,” Carey joked of her short stint as a judge on the singing competition. Get her more champagne, stat!

4. Nick Cannon may or may not be interesting enough to make the final cut of her show.

A reporter asked if Carey could confirm whether Cannon will appear on her show, and she said, “I didn’t say that, darling. I said he came around. I don’t know what makes the final cut. Sorry, was that rude? I’m so not trying to slay anybody at all,” she clarified, adding that he was “cool about being on the show.”

5. She still doesn’t want to talk about other pop stars.

Some things never change. “Are there any female artists you think are killing it in the music industry?” one reporter asked. “There’s a few,” Carey said. The reporter prodded her for specifics and she replied, “They would be lovely ladies, but it’s not their day.”

6. She binge-watches Scandal.

Carey has TV guilty pleasures too! “I really do love Scandal. Actually, I watch it on Netflix over and over,” she said. “I’m a fan of the show.”

7. Her fiancé, James Packer, gets some screen time too.

“He’s part of the series,” she said of her billionaire beau. “He’s a businessman, and that’s, like, his world, and I don’t try to permeate that situation. So I think he’s been very cool in allowing some moments.”

8. She doesn’t “do shade.”

While she’s been known to sling insults at fellow stars, she says she doesn’t know why she gets that reputation. “I don’t do shade,” she said. “I don’t know why people think this. I really don’t. Do you legitimately think I’m a shady person, or maybe a nice person that gets put in situations where I have to answer questions that might be awkward or uncomfortable, and so it’s the first thing that comes to my mind is what I say?”

9. Sometimes she’s just a normal mom.

“I try to have them do as many activities as they can that aren’t just, like, the iPad,” she said of her twins, explaining that she takes them along on her travels. “I try to keep a consistent schedule, so whether that’s karate or gymnastics or their classes, because they’re not even in kindergarten yet. But we have talks, and they sing, and they play music.”

10. Her son, Moroccan, may be a rising star.

“Yesterday, my son, Rocky, was, like, being the DJ, and I was like, ‘OK, I’m going to teach you the value of working. Go play a couple songs in a row that mommy likes.’” she recalled. “And he is a really good DJ. I’m like, ‘This kid needs to be the first, youngest DJ on the planet.’ Serious. He’s good.”

Mariah’s World premieres on E! Sunday, December 4, at 9 p.m. ET.
