The day the music died. ABC announced on Thursday, May 12, that it has canceled the country music–theme prime-time soap Nashville after four seasons.
The news comes as a surprise, as Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick (thirtysomething) had been previously announced as new showrunners for the fifth season. The series finale is set to air Wednesday, May 25.
Nashville premiered in October 2012 and centers on rival music stars played by Connie Britton (Rayna Jaymes) and Hayden Panettiere (Juliette Barnes). Heroes alum Panettiere, 26, who took a brief hiatus from the show earlier in the season, announced on May 12 that she is seeking additional treatment for postpartum depression after welcoming daughter Kaya with fiancé Wladimir Klitschko in December 2014.
This has been a dark day for TV producers ahead of next week's upfronts, with ABC in particular doling out pink slips right and left. Among the network's other shows to get the ax on May 12 were Castle, The Muppets, The Family and Agent Carter.
The full list of series from the 2014–2015 season that won't be returning to the five major networks (ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and the CW) is below, and includes CBS's Mike & Molly and The Good Wife and Fox's American Idol.
Nashville airs on ABC Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET.
