Watch out for those abs! Alexander Skarsgard is insanely ripped for his role as Tarzan in upcoming flick The Legend of Tarzan. In an exclusive first-look photo obtained by USA Today, the True Blood hunk, 39, proves he’s every inch the king of the jungle.
Clad in only tight-fitting pants, Skarsgard’s impressively sculpted physique is on full display.
The role marks the latest incarnation of the famed Edgar Rice Burroughs character. Director David Yates claims the movie will bring audiences back to the land of Africa in a romantic way. “They haven’t been there for an awfully long time,” Yates told USA Today of audiences.
Yates’ Tarzan takes on a different setting than the original 1910 story. In The Legend of Tarzan, Tarzan, aka John Clayton III, finds himself living as a British gentleman in the 1880s in London with his wife, Jane, played by Margot Robbie. Tarzan has flashbacks in the film and eventually moves back to the Congo, where danger ensues.

“It’s almost the opposite of the classic tale, where it’s about taming the beast,” Skarsgard added to USA Today. “This is about a man who’s holding back and slowly as you peel off the layers, he reverts back to a more animalistic state and lets that side of his personality out.”
The Legend of Tarzan hits theaters July 1, 2016.
