First comes the whistle register, then comes the Christmas song! Mariah Carey’s 1994 smash hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” remains one of the most beloved holiday songs in modern pop music history, and now Ariana Grande has once again followed in the Grammy winner’s stiletto steps. Releasing her original Christmas song, “Santa Tell Me,” on Sunday, Nov. 23, the former Nickelodeon star belts out the lyrics of the romantic tune.
“Santa tell me if you're really there / Don't make me fall in love again if he won't be here next year,” Grande croons. “Santa tell me if he really cares ‘cause I can’t give it all away if he won't be here next year.”
Grande, 21, has been fielding Mariah Carey comparisons since her 2013 single “The Way” was released, and she’s only fueling the fire by releasing an upbeat, bouncy holiday tune. “Santa Tell Me” is a stand-alone single, but last year, Big Sean’s girlfriend released the holiday EP, Christmas Kisses. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” was a part of Carey’s fourth album, Merry Christmas.
"Mariah has been a huge influence on me since I was a little girl," she told Us Weekly in October. "I've even done a cover of one of her songs. I don't think there are any negatives to being compared to one of the greatest vocalists of all time. It's honestly a great honor."
