Fighting for her daughter. Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) makes an impassioned plea during her custody hearing over adopted daughter Sofia in Grey’s Anatomy‘s Thursday, May 5, episode, as seen in Us Weekly‘s exclusive sneak peek.
The ABC medical drama’s preview clip shows Arizona explaining why she doesn’t need to be Sofia’s blood relative to feel a familial bond with her. The pediatric surgeon is fighting for custody after ex-wife Callie (Sara Ramirez) threatened to take the child to New York with new love interest Penny (Samantha Sloyan).
“I love my child, and I want her with me, but I know that no matter how this ends, she’ll survive,” Arizona tells the judge. “She’ll be healthy and safe and well taken care of and loved because we are her mothers.”
While answering questions from Callie’s attorney, Arizona gets a text from April (Sarah Drew) about an emergency involving a teen mother.
“But there is a child at the hospital who will not survive unless I am there,” Arizona says while abruptly exiting the courthouse.
