Nearing their last hurrah! Fox has renewed Bones for a 12th and final season, the network announced on Thursday, February 25, albeit for fewer episodes than fans might want.

Fox has given a 12th season pickup of 12 episodes — rather than the standard 22 — to the long-running crime procedural. This will be the final run for the show that stars Emily Deschanel (Temperance "Bones" Brennan) and David Boreanaz (Seeley Booth).

Shortly after the news of the final season broke, the stars took to Twitter to thank viewers for their support.

"As sad as it is to know something you have loved doing for 11 years will be ending, I am so glad we will have the opportunity to end it well," Deschanel, 39, wrote. "Thank you for the most loyal, dedicated and kind fans in the world! We couldn't have done any of this without you!"

Boreanaz, 46, tweeted, "Thank you Fans. Above and Beyond."

The writing has been on the wall for some time that the series, which launched in September 2005 and is currently in the middle of season 11, was nearing its end. Bones was one of a few Fox series to not get renewed during the network's Television Critics Association winter press tour presentation in January. Additionally, the show is dealing with ongoing litigation, as stars Deschanel and Boreanaz have teamed with two producers to sue the network over money that they believe they are owed.

"Really not sure about Bones," network exec Dana Walden said at the TCA event. She added that Fox would be sure to give the show a proper sendoff: "We've got such a loyal viewership, and those viewers deserve a very satisfying ending, so we're trying to be very sensitive about that."
