Boston Blue finally addressed whether a key character died in that brutal car crash — but what other season 2 changes are in store?

Sonequa Martin-Green spoke to Us about the confirmation that Lena’s boyfriend Brian (Ryan Broussard) survives the attack on his life, saying, “I was relieved. We all were. There was a hot second where we didn’t know what exactly was gonna happen and then we were all quickly relieved.”

She added: “It’s great because Ryan was excited as well that he was gonna get to stay with us. We’ve got a tight-knit show family going on, so it was really good news.”

Martin-Green, 41, was grateful that the surprising twist of fate wasn’t kept from them too long.

“We didn’t have to wait the entire hiatus,” she noted. “When I say a hot second, I literally mean a couple of days.”

While Brian is on the mend, the Friday, October 9, episode of the hit CBS show hinted at his internal battle with PTSD. Martin-Green teased how that would come into play as Lena attempts to support her boyfriend.

“It’s great because here you have these two people who — what a history they have with each other. They go from being partners for so long to then being in a romantic relationship to now climbing back to life together,” she noted. “They both went through these near death experiences days apart from each other and so what we find out is that over the course of the hiatus, Lena and Brian had a hiatus from work as well because they had to get better. They had to go to rehab. They were able to be a support system for each other in a brand new way.”

This will continue to be explored throughout season 2.

“Coming out of that is what makes what comes that much more hurtful and that much more challenging because they’ve seen each other at their worst,” she continued. “They saw each other at an even worse time than ever before. Their relationship was forged because of that and the trust deepened because of that. So now if something comes in that would seem to betray that trust, it’s going to be that much more painful.”

Lena also has a shakeup with Danny (Donnie Wahlberg), who will now be a sergeant with the Boston PD.

“They definitely have to deal with the new dynamic. But what I love about it is that these two have built a firm foundation. They got close very quickly,” she told Us. “I think if anyone can figure out what the new dynamic is, it’s the two of them.”

Elsewhere in the season, Lena will have a “new lease on life,” with the actress adding, “It’s a second chance in a lot of ways. That’s how I took it as Lena. There’s all these old traumas and there’s all these old wounds and everything comes out to the light and then she almost dies. There’s this golden opportunity that she takes advantage of to start fresh, to start over and to choose restoration.”

Boston Blue airs on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET before streaming the next day on Paramount+.
