‘Castle’ Finale Promo Teases ‘Tragedy,’ an End to Castle and Beckett’s ‘Epic Love Story’

The end of an era. A promo for the Monday, May 16, season finale of Castle teases a tragic ending for the “epic love story” between the series’ beloved characters Richard Castle and NYPD Captain Kate Beckett.

The clip, which aired after Castle’s May 9 episode, implies a harrowing future for Beckett, who is played by Stana Katic. “Everything ends in tragedy, even an epic love story like yours,” an anonymous villain says in the commercial.

Katic’s costar Tamala Jones is also calling it quits after season 8. Variety reports that Nathan Fillion (who plays Castle) recently signed a new deal to return to the series if it gets picked up for a ninth season.

“Kate Beckett has been a beloved character on our hit series Castle for the past eight years. We are grateful for Stana Katic’s talent and dedication to the series, and we hope to continue our relationship,” ABC said in a statement. “Tamala Jones has also been an integral part of the series, and we are grateful she was a part of Castle.”

While the TV twosome were having behind-the-scenes friction, Fillion, 45, responded to Katic’s abrupt exit in a lengthy Twitter post.

“Castle has been one of the greatest joys of my creative life, and I hope the show continues on for years to come,” he wrote on Tuesday, April 19. “Stana has been my partner all this time, and I thank her for creating the character of Beckett who will live on for all of us as one of the greatest police officers on television.”

“I wish her well, and have no doubt she will succeed in everything she pursues,” the Firefly alum added. “She will be missed.”

Castle airs on ABC Mondays at 10 p.m. ET. The season 8 finale is scheduled to air on May 16.
