Caskett shippers are on edge these days after famed novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and street-smart Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) went their separate ways in the Monday, Sept. 28 episode of the hit ABC crime procedural. And while the showrunners have clarified their plans to explore Castle and Beckett’s time apart, they comforted fans in a new interview by confirming they wouldn’t make the newlyweds divorce.

“The reality is they’ve really been together since season five,” Alexi Hawley noted to The Hollywood Reporter. “The wedding was last season, but as a couple they’ve been together and happy for several seasons now. For us we thought, ‘Let’s throw an obstacle in their way.’ Nobody’s getting divorced. They’re not splitting up forever.”

In fact, Beckett will continue her work as the newly instated captain of the 12th Precinct, while Castle will boost his P.I. business.

“She really just asked him [Castle] for time,” Hawley added of Beckett, who is secretly investigating the assassins who attempted to kill her in the two-part premiere.

“At the end of the day she’s doing it out of love,” co-showrunner Terence Paul Winter said. “She’s doing it to protect Castle, not to see if she is interested in other people or thinking maybe they went too fast or he isn’t what she wants anymore. Castle’s definitely what she wants and she’s willing to fight for it.”

And the showrunners want to reassure fans that their favorite crime-fighting duo will still be spending plenty of time together, despite the split.

“What we’ll see in episode three is [Castle’s] realized the way I can get my wife back is by doing the same thing he did when they fell in love the first time — work cases with her,” Winter said. “He finds a way to worm his way into her cases. What ends up happening is, of course, we get to a place where Castle and Beckett are building theory together, figuring out who’s behind whatever the murder of the week is. We get to see little pieces of that electricity we haven’t gotten to see for awhile now.”

Castle airs Monday nights at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
