Universal beat out competing studios for the project, which is based on an original idea by Gordon-Levitt and Michael Bacall. Details are scant, but the film is said to be an R-rated adventure about two pilots.
Wicked producer Marc Platt is behind the film, and Gordon-Levitt's company HitRECord Films will also produce. Bacall — who wrote the 21 Jump Street films, in which Tatum starred — will write the script. There is no word yet on when production would begin.
Tatum's affinity for singing and dancing has never been a secret, as the 35-year-old actor got his start in Step Up before starring in the Magic Mike films and this weekend's Hail, Caesar!, in which he tap dances and belts out a tune.
Gordon-Levitt, 34, who most recently appeared in last year's holiday-themed The Night Before, performed a Magic Mike tribute in his monologue when he hosted Saturday Night Live in September 2012. He has also showcased his impressive lip-synching skills on The Tonight Show and Lip Sync Battle.
