Don Johnson: Daughter Dakota Johnson Will Make 50 Shades of Grey “Spectacular,” But No Plans to See Raunchy Movie

Don Johnson spoke about his daughter Dakota Johnson's role in Fifty Shades of Grey

Up-and-coming actress Dakota Johnson took a major risk when she signed on to play the female lead Anastasia Steele in the upcoming film adaptation of E L James' bestseller Fifty Shades of Grey. The raunchy erotic story has Johnson, 24, playing a young woman in a boundary-pushing S&M relationship—a role her father, actor Don Johnson, has some opinions about.

The famed Miami Vice star, 64, has been doing press to promote his new movie Cold in July, and has, of course, been asked about his daughter's recent career choice.

"This is the family business," Don reportedly said in an interview with Good Morning Britain. He welcomed Dakota with ex Melanie Griffith in 1989 when they reunited a decade after their first short-lived 1970s marriage. "This is what we do, and I am absolutely certain that Dakota will take a piece of material and a character which a lot of people might imagine could be inappropriate in some ways and turn it into something spectacular."

Fifty Shades of Grey stars Dakota opposite Once Upon a Time actor Jamie Dornan, who plays businessman Christian Grey. As millions already know, Dornan's character gets involved in a dominating sexual relationship with Anastasia, a plot that has made the movie teeter between an R and NC-17 rating.

"Speaking like a proud father and a seasoned professional, I can tell you that she is a gifted, gifted actress and this will just be one part in a long line of tremendous performances in her career," Don continued. Dakota previously appeared in films including The Five-Year Engagement, 21 Jump Street, and Need for Speed

Dakota's expected "spectacular" performance in Fifty Shades is not one that Don himself is planning on seeing, however. The Nash Bridges alum reportedly told The Telegraph in a recent interview that he will not watch the upcoming movie.

"I probably will not see it just because it’s not a movie I would see," he explained to the publication. "I’ve never seen The Vampire Diaries, I’ve never seen Twilight. It’s in a category of films that I just wouldn’t be interested in."

While Don won't be lining up to see his daughter in the polarizing picture, one person who may do so is Dakota's mom. When it was announced that her daughter had booked the role, Melanie Griffith took to Twitter to celebrate, tweeting, "My beautiful child Dakota has been chosen to play Anna Steele in 50 Shades!!! Look out world! Here she comes!!! #proudmama."
