Ellen DeGeneres landed a terminally ill comic his very own HBO special — and announced the news to him on TV.
Quincy Jones, who was diagnosed with stage IV mesothelioma in July 2015, was shocked and beside himself when the host told him on Monday, March 21, about his next gig.
“You mentioned last time that you really want to do a comedy special, that that’s very important to you,” DeGeneres, 58, said. “What you don’t know is we called the head of HBO — and your people didn’t even tell you this — but HBO is going to air your special.”
But DeGeneres’ sweet gesture didn’t end there. DeGeneres told Jones, 32, that Shutterfly was donating $15,000 to help him make the project.
Jones, not so surprisingly, freaked out. “You’re lying!” he said, laughing. “Are you serious?”
Jones’ special will tape at the Teragram Ballroom in L.A. on Monday, April 4.
