Ginnifer Goodwin is the latest celeb to explore her family’s genealogy on TLC’s Who Do You Think You Are? Us Weekly has an exclusive sneak peek at her episode, airing Sunday, July 26, at 9 p.m. ET, in which she sees a photo of her great-grandfather for the very first time.
The Once Upon a Time star knew nothing about her paternal grandfather’s family because he refused to talk about his parents, and now, after tracing her lineage on WDYTYA, she knows why. Her grandfather spent time in federal prison, and the first picture she sees of him is a mugshot from when he was 29 years old.
“Oh wow,” she says as she sees his face for the first time. Tearfully, she picks up his prison documents and examines them. “That’s wild,” she whispers.
“I don’t think anyone in my family has ever seen a picture of him! I can see him in my father. The Goodwin gene is strong,” she says.
Watch the clip above for more details on her discovery, including a heartbreaking letter her great-grandmother sent to the prison warden asking about a woman she suspected was her husband’s mistress.
