Glee alum Becca Tobin had a visceral reaction to the reboot announcement.
“This gives me diarrhea,” Tobin, 40, said during the Thursday, October 22, episode of the “LadyGang” podcast, one day after Disney announced that the musical comedy-drama would be coming back, with original cocreator Ryan Murphy at the helm. “It’s a situation where I’m not an original cast member. I was not in season 1. I came in three seasons in. So, there’s no guarantee.”
Tobin joined Glee more than a decade ago in season 4 as Kitty Wilde, a member of the McKinley High cheerleader squad. She became a series regular in season 5, which premiered in September 2013, and returned for the show’s sixth and final season in January 2015.
“There’s no guarantee for anyone, anything, anywhere ever, right?” she continued on Thursday. “But it’s the type of thing where you just sit, and you wait, and you’re like, ‘OK, is he going to decide to invite, ask, whatever?’ It’s such a weird feeling.”
Tobin then expressed her fears about the reboot moving forward without her.
“You know when you get that kind of anxiety where you’re like, ‘Oh God, is this going to be the type of thing where it comes back and everywhere I go, and I’m not doing anything, not even like one scene of one episode, and then everybody’s talking to me and asking me about it?’” she pondered.
Tobin added, “I know how incredibly challenging it’s going to be for them to weave in already these original cast members and the new people and the whatever. I don’t know what the plan is. I do know the original people will most likely be coming back. It’s not a mystery that Ryan has spoken to them.”
Disney announced on Wednesday, October 21, that the reboot was ordered for Disney+ and Hulu. The show’s original studio, 20th Television, is also attached to the project.
Glee first aired on Fox for six seasons from 2009 to 2015. The show, cocreated by Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, followed the glee club at William McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio, with multiple musical numbers in every episode.
The cast included Lea Michele, Dianna Agron, Amber Riley, Chris Colfer, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Heather Morris, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Harry Shum Jr., Darren Criss and more. Three of the show’s stars, Cory Monteith, Mark Salling and Naya Rivera, have died.
While a cast has not yet been announced for the reboot, Murphy, 60, revealed in September that he had finished the script and was in touch with some of the original stars.
“I just finished the script an hour ago. We have a script. Brad and Ian and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something,” the American Horror Story cocreator told Entertainment Tonight. “I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet. They all had a lot of questions, but they were all enthusiastic about the idea. Nobody’s read it. I don’t know … we’ll see. I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, because we were very close when we were making it.”
Michele, 40, has also expressed interest in returning.
“I love Glee. I will always love Glee. I love Ryan Murphy,” she told E! News last month. “[The show] just holds such a special place in my heart for me. So, I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”
