‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Recap: Meredith’s New Therapist Asks If She’s in Love With Alex

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) faced a tough road to recovery on the Thursday, February 18, episode of Grey’s Anatomy, following a patient’s brutal attack on her last week. However, her therapy sessions in the ABC drama’s new episode proved that her own demons may ultimately delay the healing process.

Where Therapy Begins

Meredith began treatment by telling her unwanted therapist in a monotone voice, “I am here. I am happy to be here. I am lucky to be alive.” It’s clear she’s glad to be alive, although she’s not necessarily thrilled about taking part in the session.

From the start, Meredith resisted opening up to her therapist, but he wasn’t about to relent. “Do you have feelings for Alex? Do you love Alex?” he questioned after hearing her rants about her friends. All she could do was attempt to laugh off the queries and dismiss any possibility of romance.

Meanwhile at the Hospital

As if an ambulance explosion wasn’t enough to startle the Grey-Sloan staff, there was plenty of in-house drama to do the job. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) never gave Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) a clear response to his proposal, but they appeared to be reconciling and were later shown kissing.

Another pair with a complicated relationship is Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd), who can’t seem to keep their angst toward each other at a minimum, even at work. Meanwhile, Alex got a special guest in the form of a 15-year-old cancer patient, who sought out the doctor as a “miracle” worker, and Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) pitched a potentially dangerous procedure to help save the teen.

Why Are You Lonely?

As Meredith’s therapist tried to make more progress with her, the surgical chief finally confided in him about the root of her feelings. “Have you read my files? This attack is the small stuff,” claimed Meredith. She expressed her love for being alone and her angst toward her friends for trying to comfort her, and the therapist let her know it’s OK to tell people you want to be alone. But does Mer really want to be?

Meredith clearly doesn’t seek out the moral support of friends, but it’s not until her therapy session that she understands why. Flashbacks to every stage of her lonely life flash before her eyes: her mom, her sister, her husband. What’s left? An isolated Meredith, each step of the way. Hopefully, she’s on a path to heal.

Risks Are Worth It

Initially, Alex didn’t agree with the risky surgery that Callie and Maggie had planned for his patient, but the ladies took matters into their own hands and eventually wound up prevailing, earning Alex’s support along the way.
