“Congrats on 10 incredible years!” Capshaw, 39, tweeted on Monday, May 23, as she shared Ramirez’s farewell message. “I wish @SaraRamirez the very best & I celebrate what Callie has given to all of us.”

Ramirez, 40, played Dr. Callie Torres, the ex-wife of Capshaw’s pediatrician Arizona Robbins. At the end of the season 12 finale, which aired on Thursday, May 19, Arizona was seen making peace with Callie over custody of their child as the orthopedic surgeon prepared to move to NYC.

As Us Weekly previously reported, even show creator Shonda Rhimes was surprised by Ramirez’s sudden exit, admitting over the weekend that she found out “maybe three days” before the announcement.

“It wasn’t a planned thing,” Rhimes, 46, said at the Vulture Festival in NYC on Sunday, May 22. “I had a different plan going and when Sara came in and said, ‘I really need to take this break,’ I was lucky that we’d shot the end of the season with her going to New York.”

Prior to her departure, Ramirez hinted that she was leaving the show in a cryptic tweet in April. “That’s a wrap for Doctor #CallieTorres #Season13 #GreysAnatomy #ThankYou all for an enriching & unforgettable #Rollercoaster ride,” she wrote.

Ramirez, who joined Grey’s Anatomy in season 2, said in a statement that she is “taking some welcome time off,” leaving the door open for Callie’s possible return, adding, “Shonda’s been incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations!”
