Bad news for fans of The Good Wife? Julianna Margulies, who stars in the CBS drama, spoke at an event on Thursday, January 22, and implied that this may be her final season with the show, Vulture reports.
The ER alum, 49, addressed the crowd at the Casting Society of America’s Artios Awards, where she honored the series’ cocreators and showrunners, Robert and Michelle King. The Kings have previously announced that they are stepping away from the Emmy-winning show after its currently airing seventh season, as their new series BrainDead launches on CBS in the summer.
“I surprised Robert and Michelle tonight,” Margulies told the crowd filled with casting directors. “They didn’t know I was going to be here. They think I’m here for them, but I’m unemployed come April, and I think you haven’t seen me in a while, at least not in person, so I thought I should show up.”
It is unclear whether the actress, who nabbed Emmys for playing lawyer Alicia Florrick on the series in 2011 and 2014, was joking about being “unemployed” after the season finishes shooting. She has yet to make any follow-up statements.
The comments come as a surprise, as CBS has not announced any official decision on the future of the series, which launched in September 2009 and also stars Christine Baranski, Matt Czuchry and Alan Cumming. In a TV Line interview published earlier this month, Robert King said that the network was working on the cast members’ deals for an eighth season and that he and Michelle would help to supervise the writing staff.
