Emotions heighten for Bachelor in Paradise newlyweds Jade Roper and Tanner Tolbert on Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars’ Friday, November 18, episode, as seen in Us Weekly‘s exclusive sneak peek.
In the We TV relationship series’ preview clip, Dr. Venus Nicolino announces an exercise that requires vulnerability among the cast members. “The whole point of today’s lesson: how to get your emotional baggage out of your relationship,” she says. “And right now, step one is putting it all out on the table.”
This leads Roper to confide, “My mom emotionally and verbally abused me, and said that boys wouldn’t want to date me and that I wasn’t worthy of love, and would tell me this every single day before I went to school.”
“I’ve been through some therapy for this, because it was just something I thought I deserved — and I thought about suicide all the time,” the Bachelor season 19 alum says.
Dr. Nicolino tells the cameras, “This is really painful for Jade — and that’s understandable.”
Roper continues to explain her challenges growing up: “My dad knew about it, but my dad never did anything. … If my dad didn’t stick up for me, then [it was] like what my mom said was true.”
“I grew to like hate myself,” she reveals. “I became very depressed. Then I had anxiety and I started drinking a ton just to like numb myself.”
Meanwhile, Tolbert shares recollections of his father’s affair: “I remember my dad ran around on my mom a lot, and he had another house over another side of town. And I guess he said he was living there. But my mom found this out, and I went with her, and we busted the front door.”
