The need for speed! Jerry Bruckheimer got Top Gun fans amped up on Wednesday, January 27. The producer teased Top Gun 2 by tweeting a photo of himself with star Tom Cruise.
“Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2,” Bruckheimer tweeted to fans, sending the Internet into a frenzy with excitement.
“It’s got me psyched!” one fan tweeted, while another added: “Super excited.”
The sequel to the Oscar-winning 1986 drama, which starred Cruise as a young Navy pilot, was confirmed last year by Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison. Cruise, 53, and his costar Val Kilmer, aka Iceman, are both reprising their roles.

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters. … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today,” Ellison said about the sequel’s plot at a press junket last year, via Variety.
“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” he teased of Cruise at the time.
A release date has yet to be announced.
