Josh Duhamel has finally spoken out after Netflix’s shocking decision to cancel Ransom Canyon.
“I was pretty surprised, if I’m being honest,” Duhamel, 53, exclusively told Us while promoting his partnership with STOKE Shoes. “I thought [it was safe] because the show was No. 1 for almost two weeks and the numbers looked really, really good and people really loved the show.”
Duhamel “was bummed” to see the show “not get picked up” for season 3.
“I was a little upset with Netflix for not giving the audience another season, because people really did love the show … but that’s the business,” he continued. “At the same time, I get it. They have their reasons for why things stay and why things go. I don’t always understand those reasons, but it’s not my job to question.”
He continued: “I’ve just gotta move on. I just feel bad for the fans who are really invested in it, and that’s it, unfortunately.”
Duhamel didn’t rule out taking on another cowboy role in the near future, adding, “I really loved playing that character. It was in my wheelhouse, because I remember when I first got the job, I was actually out of my cabin, which isn’t a ranch. But I’m always doing ranch-y type things.”
The actor quickly found a connection to his Ransom Canyon character.
“I was already in that mindset and I kind of lived that life anyway,” he continued. “So there’s something about it, I just really felt comfortable in that role. So the answer is yes, I would love to do more stuff like that. There’s a couple of things in the works that I may do, but those are too far off to talk about yet.”

Duhamel added: “But I’d much rather play a cowboy than a defense attorney.”
Ransom Canyon debuted in April 2025 and was based on Jodi Thomas‘ book series about a town in the Texas Hill Country that is full of drama, romance and hope. Along with Duhamel, the show starred Minka Kelly, Garrett Wareing, Lizzy Greene, Marianly Tejada, Jack Schumacher, Andrew Liner and James Brolin in season 1.
Ransom Canyon’s second season aired earlier this year. Ahead of the show’s cancellation in September, showrunner April Blair exclusively gave Us insight into what would have happened in season 3 after Staten (Duhamel) and Quinn (Kelly) got together.
“For me, Staten and Quinn are meant to be together and that is the true north of our series. I don’t foresee continuing to split them up and put them together and split them up and put them together,” she revealed in July. “Being halfway through the season 3 writers’ room, I can tell you there are many, many more obstacles to come because I think we pitched it to Netflix as season 1 and season 2 are about their journey to choose each other. But once you choose someone and you really begin a relationship, that’s where the real work begins. That’s where you uncover people’s dirty little secrets and people’s things they don’t tell. All of the challenges, even the silly stuff.”
While Duhamel isn’t returning to continue Staten’s story, he is booked and busy with various projects — including his partnership with STOKE Shoes, a footwear brand designed for men with wide feet. The actor, who wears wide-width shoes himself, became a loyal customer after struggling to find comfortable sneakers. As part of the partnership, Duhamel will appear in the brand’s social media campaigns.
“I’d been talking to these guys for about a year. I’ve never really gotten behind a lot of things and if I do, it’s only because I really love it,” he told Us. “I gotta admit, I became slightly obsessed with these shoes. They’re truly the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn. And I wear them all the time now.”
Duhamel was thrilled to finally discover a perfect fit for his feet, adding, “Like most people, I’m sure they’re tired of paying the athlete tax for $250 for a pair of shoes that don’t really fit right. It’s all about comfort. They’re made for guys who have wider feet and for guys who are on their feet all day. That’s really what it is. So I just really, really love the brand.”
