Looks like Katie Holmes won't get her big moment in the sun as Jackie O after all.

A&E has canceled the eight-part miniseries The Kennedys, in which Holmes, 32, stars as former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Greg Kinnear would have appeared as John F. Kennedy on the series, scheduled to have been broadcast in the spring.

"We are proud of the work all of our talent put into the making of The Kennedys and the painstaking efforts that went into creating a drama that is compelling while rich in historic detail," Muse Entertainment and Asylum Entertainment, who coproduced the miniseries, said in a statement Friday.

"Although we regret this does not fit into the History Channel's plans, we are confident that television viewers in the United States will join viewers from around the world in having an opportunity to watch this series in the near future," the producers continued.

Holmes shot scenes as Jackie O in July, telling UsMagazine.com that portraying the American icon was "really fun! Her clothes were magnificent. I feel really lucky to be playing her."

Deadline.com reports the series — reportedly scrapped due to pressure from the Kennedy family — is now being shopped to pay-cable net Showtime.
