Kimiko Glenn recently moved to New York City from Los Angeles, and she brought her adorable mixed-breed dog, Arnold, with her. While the Orange Is the New Black actress — who relocated to the Big Apple to play Dawn in Sara Bareilles’ Tony-nominated musical Waitress — is enjoying life on the East Coast, her cute little canine has had only one hiccup when it comes to adjusting to Manhattan living: He can’t stop barking.
So Glenn, 26 (she plays Brook Soso on the beloved Netflix show), turned to Us Weekly readers for their advice: “I just want to know what you guys do to help your dogs not bark so much.” Here’s what you said.
“Dogs that bark excessively do so for a number of reasons. It can stem from anxiety, fear and from a sense of needing to protect one’s territory. Perhaps your dog is simply craving some extra attention,” user janedoebaby advises. “Finding out what is causing your pooch to be so vocal is the first step in helping them curb this behavior. Keep in mind to only use positive reinforcement during any training session and to be patient with your furry friend. Everything takes time :)”
User Ccppww suggests that Glenn should be more assertive at home, and if that doesn’t work, the reader recommends using a kennel or, alternately, socializing her dog with other pets or people.
“Maybe he thinks he is alpha and thus barks whenever guests come over. She should establish herself as in charge when guests come over, and if he can’t stop even then maybe she should put him in a fun and cozy kennel while people are over. My neighbor’s’ dogs are home alone all day and bark constantly,” the reader writes. “I think they’re just lonely and bored. But it’s still annoying. Maybe her dog needs more stimulation per the other recommendation. A happy dog is a nice dog, for the most part.”
Reader Noxy thinks that the OITNB star should give Arnold more exercise to help stimulate him. “He could be so noisy because he isn’t getting stimulated enough,” the user shares. “Take him on longer/more challenging walks, play with him in the house more often, and sometimes simply not giving him any attention while he’s barking can work.”
When it comes to Arnold’s new surroundings, Glenn says, “I think he prefers L.A., but he’s a New York dog now. So he’s honestly prepared for anything and can adapt to any situation.”
