The new film stars Idina Menzel, who plays C.C., and Nia Long, who plays Hillary. The trailer begins with their characters as young girls meeting on the beach and posing in a photo booth à la the original 1988 film before we see them as adults. Menzel, who portrays an aspiring singer and actress, is resurrecting Bette Midler’s famous character, while Long serves as her supportive best friend, a character originally played by Barbara Hershey.

The film tells the story of childhood best friends from different upbringings and follows their ups and downs through marriage, career, loss and motherhood to a tear-jerking end.

The remake will feature new versions of [both of] the film’s iconic songs “Wind Beneath My Wings” and “The Glory of Love.” The original “Wind Beneath My Wings” was performed by Midler in the film and earned a Grammy for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1990. In the new trailer, Menzel’s version of the track can be heard.

Back in August, Midler gave the Frozen actress her blessing for reprising her iconic role.

“Can’t wait to see Idina Menzel as CC in Lifetime’s Beaches! DON’T TELL ME THE ENDING!” the award-winning actress, 70, tweeted.
