All hail! After a buzzy debut at Cannes in May, Macbeth got its first official teaser trailer on Thursday, June 4, four months before its planned UK theatrical release on Oct. 2.
The nearly two-minute video, posted to StudioCanal’s YouTube page, offers a tantalizing look at the upcoming movie adaptation of William Shakespeare‘s famed tragedy about a military general turned King of Scotland, played in the Justin Kurzel-directed film by Michael Fassbender.
The trailer begins hauntingly, with Fassbender emerging from a slow-motion battle scene as unseen voices whisper, “All hail Macbeth. All hail. All hail Macbeth that shall be king.” The action quickly picks up from there, showing Macbeth’s dark, doomed rise to the throne.
“O full of scorpions is my mind,” Fassbender murmurs to Marion Cotillard‘s Lady Macbeth, as images of still more bloody battle scenes flash across the screen.
The X-Men: Days of Future Past actor is of course not the first star to play the tragic Shakespearean antihero on the big screen. Other former portrayers include Orson Welles and Jon Finch.
