Can You Really ‘Reset’ Your Gut in a Week? What Gut-Health Retreats Actually Do to Your Microbiome

Microbiome ‘Reset’: Can You Really Change Your Gut in 1 Week?

Imagine checking into a gorgeous retreat and coming home a few days later with a whole new gut. At least, that’s the idea behind a growing crop of gut-health getaways, where specialized menus, wellness routines and even microbiome testing promise to help travelers get their digestive health on track.

It sounds pretty great, especially if your gut hasn’t exactly been your best friend lately. But before you book a flight in the name of better digestion, there’s one big question: Can you actually “reset” your gut in a week?

How Quickly Can Your Gut Microbiome Change?

Faster than you might expect. A 2025 pilot study followed 24 people through a nine-day meditation retreat that combined a vegetarian diet, physical and breathing exercises and intensive meditation. Researchers observed changes in participants’ gut microbiomes over the course of the retreat.

What that study can’t tell you is which part of the experience did the work. It was small, lacked a control group and asked participants to change several parts of their routines at once.

Diet by itself appears to shift things quickly. A study available through the National Institutes of Health found that short-term dietary changes rapidly altered participants’ gut microbiomes, with differences appearing within a day of the animal-based diet reaching the gut. Those shifts didn’t necessarily stick. In the same research, participants’ gut microbiota reverted to their original structure two days after the animal-based diet ended.

Why a Change Isn’t the Same as a ‘Reset’

Here is where the idea of a gut ‘reset’ gets slippery. Scientists can measure changes in a person’s microbiome, but there is no single ideal microbiome everyone should be chasing.

Hannah Holscher, PhD, a professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, told NPR there’s “no clinical or scientific consensus around what constitutes a healthy microbiome.”

Healthy people’s microbiomes vary considerably based on factors including geography, lifestyle, diet and genetics. A retreat may genuinely alter yours without proving it has been reset to some universally better state. “Different” and “better” are not the same claim.

What a Personalized Gut Test Actually Tells You

Some retreats fold microbiome testing into the experience, sometimes as part of a personalized package. An international expert consensus on microbiome testing found that evidence supporting its clinical usefulness remains limited and that direct-to-consumer microbiome tests currently lack proven value in clinical practice.

The expert panel also said there isn’t enough information to establish strict healthy reference ranges for the abundance of individual microbial species, and it discouraged testing companies from offering therapeutic advice based on results. A detailed report in your inbox is not the same thing as a proven, personalized health plan.

What Can a Gut-Health Retreat Actually Do to Your Microbiome?

Strip away the word “reset,” and the real appeal gets clearer. You temporarily change what you eat and how you spend your days in a structured environment that makes those changes easier to follow. For plenty of travelers, that structure is the actual product.

And you don’t necessarily need a retreat to get your microbiome’s attention. An NIH-available study found that changing what you eat can shift it surprisingly quickly. But that research doesn’t establish that traveling somewhere is necessary to influence what lives in your gut. Similar microbiome changes could, in principle, come from changing your meals at home.

Here’s the honest takeaway. Gut-health retreats aren’t necessarily doing nothing. Changing your diet can affect your microbiome, sometimes within a day. That’s a different claim from wiping the slate clean and building a perfectly healthy gut in a few days. The science supports quick change. It does not support a universal reset.
