What Is ‘Obsession’ About?

If you are one of the unlucky few who haven’t seen Obsession or don’t know what it’s about, here’s a brief synopsis:

Bear (Johnston) has a crush childhood friend and coworker, Nikki (Navarrette). Since he’s too shy and, let’s be honest, cowardly to actually ask her out on a date, he turns to the occult for help. He buys a “One-Wish Willow” trinket to help him win Nikki’s love. (A One-Wish Willow is like a Monkey’s Paw, but as a small tree branch you break to make your wish come true.) Bear gets his wish, but at a price – Nikki becomes fixated – one could say … obsessed – with Bear, and wants to spend every single minute with him. When Bear wants to spend time away with her, she becomes moody, hostile and eventually deadly. Be careful what you wish for, Bear, because you just might get it!

Is ‘Obsession’ Worth Watching?

Hell, yes. There’s a good reason the film made so much money – it sparked a nationwide discussion about toxic relationships and how idolizing our partners almost always has negative consequences. It’s also just an incredibly well-made movie, with 26-year-old director Curry Barker deservedly getting his blood-splattered flowers for making a horror film that has both something to say and scares the hell out of anyone who watches it.
