The first look at Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson‘s return to Private Eyes shows off their dynamic as a fictional couple — with a surprise baby.
In Us‘ exclusive debut of the Private Eyes: West Coast season 1 trailer, Shade (Priestley) and Angie (Sampson) consider returning to their days as private investigators despite a major move and other shocking milestones in their personal lives.
“This is what we used to do,” Shade says as Angie tries to solve a new case five years later. “Have you forgotten all the close calls we had? We are parents now!”
Shade makes it clear that “it can’t be like it was” when it comes to their careers, adding, “We work from home now and we set up our agency right here.”
According to Shade, they are on a “new coast” with new cases, but they still have the “same old weirdo suspects.” Elsewhere in the sneak peek, Shade gets mocked for having an infant child later in life when someone asks “how old” he will be when his son graduates.
“I am younger than Clooney!” he quips. (George Clooney famously became a father for the first time at age 56.)
Based on the novel of the same name by G.B. Joyce, Private Eyes featured Priestley and Sampson as two protagonist private investigators solving crimes in Toronto. The show ran in Canada for five seasons before it was canceled in 2021.
Five years later, Priestley, 57, and Sampson, 48, are reuniting for Private Eyes: West Coast, which picks up after Shade and Angie’s onscreen kiss.
“A lot has happened and Shade and Angie are in very different places in their lives,” Priestley teased to Us. “As we come into the show, Matt Shade is on a book tour and he’s written a book and leaning into his retirement in Victoria while being a full-time father.”
Priestley hinted at potential challenges, adding, “But being retired and Angie is grappling with having a one year old and the baby not needing her so much anymore. So how is she going to reintegrate into the world and society?”
He continued: “When the opportunity arises in the first episode for Shade and Angie to get back into the world of being PIs, she is very enthusiastic and wants to do it. Shade is a little more reserved. But because he’s a good supportive husband, he says, ‘Angie, if you want to do this, I guess we’re doing it.’ He gets on board pretty quick.”
Sampson, meanwhile, jumped at the chance to return to the fan-favorite characters.
“It was really easy. It was seamless. There was a super ease after working together for so long,” she shared with Us. “We did 60 episodes of the original series. Almost six years. We worked together, so there was definitely a familial ease. … There were these added layers of humor where nothing was as serious as it was before — and the baby, too.”
Private Eyes: West Coast premieres on The CW Monday, October 5, at 8 p.m. ET.
