The competition is stiff! But Chocolate City’s Robert Ri’chard was up for the challenge when he signed on to the Magic Mike-inspired flick.
“I haven’t seen Magic Mike,” the 32-year-old admitted. “But everybody loves Channing [Tatum], he’s the man.”
The former child actor was ready for the comparison to the actor, whose life inspired Magic Mike.
“Ironically [Channing’s] character is named Michael, and my character is named Michael. So it’s like – do you prefer vanilla or chocolate Michael? Everybody loves chocolate, especially sexy chocolate!” he said, referring to Ri’chard’s character’s stage name.
In fact, it wasn’t the comparison that intimidated the buff star as much as his co-star, Tyson Beckford.
“Hell yeah I was nervous about this movie! Tyson Beckford is an international supermodel! He’s the most famous male model in the world. And I’ve got to be on stage with someone who is a sex symbol, an icon and the number 1 leader in his industry for the last 20 years!”
Tatum, who gave his seal of approval for the flick (but declined to appear in it), has long been impressing Ri’chard with his moves.
“I love Channing. He and I did Coach Carter together and he’s like the biggest sweetheart on the planet… When Channing and I did Coach Carter we would go out, and I didn’t know that white boys could dance that good! Channing can dance!”
But in the end, he was thrilled with the results of the movie, which premieres Friday May 22.
“This is the first thing I’ve ever seen, of my entire career,” he confessed. “And I’m so proud of this movie.”
