It’s hard to believe, but Sandra Bullock turned 50 on Saturday, July 26. The Oscar-winning A-Lister has been in show business since the ’80s, producing some of the most memorable blockbusters and romantic comedies of the last three decades.
In honor of her big birthday, Us Weekly compiled a list of her five most timeless film roles:
1. Miss Congeniality (2000)
No one was quite as much of a badass as FBI agent Gracie Hart. Not only could she handle herself when being attacked (“Don’t forget to sing!”), but she also was open to changing her own prejudices against beauty pageants … err, we mean “scholarship programs.”
2. Gravity (2013)
She may not have taken home the Oscar for this performance, but Bullock amazed us by her sheer determination and intense acting chops while playing stranded astronaut Ryan Stone. She may have been floating through space, but she was far from helpless.
3. Speed (1994)
Bullock and Keanu Reeves‘ action-packed bus ride went down in cinema history, as she kept her cool while he tried to defuse a bomb. Ignoring Speed 2: Cruise Control, this high-stakes chase was unforgettable.
4. The Blind Side (2009)
Bullock’s role as spitfire southerner Leigh Anne Tuohy earned her an Oscar, and cemented her place in our hearts. Her portrayal was heartfelt and comical without being too extreme.
5. 28 Days (2000)
As a recovering alcoholic struggling with her addiction and her complicated personal life, Bullock continued to pull at our heart strings. Her journey was experienced without rose-covered glasses, opening up the actual nature of the disease and showing off her impeccable acting skills.
