Sound of Music Showdown: Was Lady Gaga or Carrie Underwood a Better Maria?

The airwaves are alive with the sound of music! Rodgers & Hammerstein's iconic work The Sound of Music is officially having a resurgence after two big stars put their own modern spins on the Broadway musical and its 1965 film.

One year after Carrie Underwood starred in The Sound of Music Live! on NBC, Lady Gaga paid tribute to the Julie Andrews-starring movie at the 87th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Mother Monster, 28, stole the show at the 2015 Oscars with her impressive performance. The "Applause" artist sang classic tunes from The Sound of Music, including "My Favorite Things," "Edelweiss," and "Climb Ev'ry Mountain."

Gaga's show inspired a standing ovation from the audience and a quick embrace from the original Maria star herself, Andrews, 79. After making a surprise appearance on the stage, Andrews exclaimed, "Dear Lady Gaga, thank you for that wonderful tribute. It really warmed my heart. It really did."

For her part, Underwood, 31, charted huge ratings for her live NBC production of The Sound of Music in December 2013. Playing Maria opposite Stephen Moyer's Captain von Trapp, Underwood saw such success with The Sound of Music Live! that her performance inspired NBC's subsequent Peter Pan Live! show.

The American Idol alum tried her hand at the Sound of Music tunes, singing "Do-Re-Mi" with the children and even going after "The Lonely Goatherd."
