‘Splash’ Remake With Channing Tatum, Jillian Bell Is Happening — But There’s a Twist!

Allen and Madison are back! Disney and Imagine Entertainment are remaking the 1984 classic Splash, Deadline reports.

Channing Tatum and Workaholics actress Jillian Bell will star in the upcoming flick — but there’s a catch! The new version will be a role reversal, with Tatum, 36, taking on the supernatural role that Daryl Hannah played (merman!) and Bell, 32, re-creating Tom Hanks’ character.

Tatum is evidently a fan of remakes. The hunky star previously re-created the TV show 21 Jump Street in the 2012 comedy of the same name. He went on to star alongside Bell in the 2014 sequel, 22 Jump Street.

Hannah, 55, and Hanks, 60, played Madison and Allen Bauer, respectively, in the original romantic comedy, a modern take on Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale The Little Mermaid, in which a young man falls in love with a mermaid (who’s temporarily lost her fish tail to walk on dry land). Other stars included Eugene Levy (Walter Kornbluth) and the late John Candy (Freddie Bauer).

The film’s director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer are back for the remake. Marja-Lewis Ryan is attached to write the script.

Hanks opened up about his star-making audition during an interview with Buzzfeed. “We had a read-through of it and I was very nervous. I was trying to score with all my lines and trying to get a big reaction or a laugh because that’s all I had done on TV is sell a script on Mondays and shoot it on Thursdays,” he said in October 2015. “And afterward, Ron took me to the side and he said, ‘I know what you’re doing. You’re trying to get laughs, but your job is not to get laughs. Your job is to love that girl.’ So I thought, ‘Oh my God, one day in and I’m already getting a stern talking-to from the boss. I’m doomed with this thing.’ But that movie turned out good!”
