There are some fans of The Pitt rooting for Langdon and Mel to have a romance — but Noah Wyle is not one of them.
“I’m not seeing it. That’s not a sexualized relationship,” Wyle, 55, told Deadline on Wednesday, July 8. “It’s very fraternal. It’s brother and sister, and it’s really endearing because it doesn’t have that other energy behind it.”
The actor, who plays Dr. Robby, denied plans for anything more.
“It’s just empathy and compassion and mutual respect. But I get why people like shipping characters, and I’m certainly not throwing shade at anybody’s fantasy,” Wyle continued. “But for my money, Langdon has a marriage that he’s struggling with, two kids, a dog, medical debt and a recovery road. He’s got enough on his plate; he needs a friend.”
Season 1 of the hit HBO Max series introduced Us to Mel (Taylor Dearden), Langdon (Patrick Ball) and the staff of a Pittsburgh hospital’s emergency department. While working a grueling 15-hour shift, Mel found a mentor in Langdon, which inspired some viewers to question whether their connection could turn into something more.
Ball, 36, however, previously shut down the concept of a romance.

“I think that has to do with the fact that audiences have been trained by most medical dramas for love affairs more than it has to do with me and Mel,” he shared in April 2026, adding that he finds it “so funny” to learn about fans who are supporting the chemistry between his and Dearden’s characters. “I think what Langdon sees in Mel is that she’s got the right stuff. She sees the world the right way. She understands what this job is. She’s really smart and she’s really competent and she’s also a caregiver.”
He continued: “Langdon is a caregiver. He’s learning what it means to be a father and the responsibility of that, the complexity of that and the scariness of that. There’s no playbook on how to be a good dad, and he’s really trying to figure that out. Then he sees somebody else who is a caregiver and can see them carrying that responsibility. I think he understands that and is drawn to that. I don’t think there’s anything romantic about it. It’s just a ‘real recognizes real’ [type of] great, positive and platonic relationship.”
Dearden, 33, had a similar take on the subject, telling Us in February 2025, “I didn’t know people were thinking that. That’s really funny. The funny thing is Patrick is always like, ‘God, you remind me of my sister.'”
The actress didn’t see Mel bringing romance into the workplace. “I think Mel is asexual,” she said. “I don’t think that’s part of how Mel would think — especially at work. She’s a hyper-professional.”
The Pitt is streaming on HBO Max.
