The Rookie concluded season 8 with Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen’s engagement, which ended with a “frustrating” last-minute twist.

During the Monday, May 4, episode of the hit ABC series, Chenford a.k.a Tim (Eric Winter) and Lucy (Melissa O’Neill) were savoring the moment after he proposed on a remote beach. They didn’t get to celebrate for long because two beachgoers approached the couple — and knocked them out with a tranquilizer before kidnapping them for notorious criminal Heath Everett.

“They’re gonna be in a dungeon somewhere, whether literally or figuratively, I don’t know yet,” showrunner Alexi Hawley quipped to TVLine. “But yes, it was a shining moment of joy and happiness, and then of course, I had to screw that up.”

Hawley teased “uncharted waters” for the pair in season 9.

“I played the long game with it, but we did go back and forth about whether he should be taken or she should be taken,” he recalled. “But ultimately it felt like this is a journey they’re both on together, and so it’s much more frustrating and satisfying to have them both in jeopardy together.”

While Hawley couldn’t reveal Tim and Lucy’s fate, he made it clear that their engagement is the real deal, adding, “I’m going to say this, and then people are going to freak out: As long as everybody survives, there’s a wedding. We’re all very invested in them, both individually and together. The writers are equally invested in them.”

He continued: “I don’t know, exactly. We haven’t started [writing season 9] yet. I haven’t really plotted out where season 9 goes. Seeing them held wherever they’re held, however they’re held, together, will be dramatic and interesting.”

The Rookie, which premiered in 2018, follows police offers from a precinct in Los Angeles. In addition to Winter and O’Neill, the show stars Nathan Fillion, Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Mekia Cox, Shawn Ashmore and Jenna Dewan.

With fans rooting for Chenford as a couple for years, Hawley promised to deliver on this milestone moment.

“We’ve done a lot of weddings on the show. We’ve done Lopez, who went missing from her wedding way back when, and then the Nolan and Bailey wedding was all in on doing the full wedding,” he noted. “It was a celebration and all that kind of stuff. So, I’m not sure — a fresh way in is what I’m always looking for. I’m as invested in their relationship as anyone, and so whatever it would be would be satisfying.”

The Rookie is currently streaming on Hulu.
