Tom Cruise Is Unrecognizable in ‘Astonishing’ Transformation for New Movie ‘Digger’

Tom Cruise underwent a physical transformation for his upcoming movie Digger.

The trailer, released on Monday, July 13, opens with the normally fit movie star entering the frame shirtless — and looking totally different. As the trailer continues, Cruise’s dark hair has been turned gray and he appears to be wearing facial prosthetics for the role.

Cruise, 64, plays Digger Rockwell in the film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The logline leaves a lot to the imagination, reading, “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”

Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde are also set to star.

Monday’s trailer sees Cruise’s Digger getting a professional opinion on the longevity of his cat’s lifespan before cutting to him discussing his “d***” while attempting to understand why one of his employees wants to shut down a project his company is working on.

Goodman, 74, playing the president of the United States, aptly notes that “Digger got us into this mess and Digger is going to get us out.”

The trailer is set to Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House,” giving an air of unseriousness to the film — which appears to be a comedy.

Cruise also joined TikTok ahead of the film’s release, promoting only Digger in his three videos thus far. The actor has since racked up more than one million followers since joining the platform.

Cruise discussed his transformation for the movie earlier this month during a Q&A in Los Angeles.

“I have never had something that could challenge me in this way — and neither has Alejandro — when we went in, ever,” Cruise teased. “When you see this film, it’s totally original.”

Cruise also noted that director Iñárritu, 62, took “several days” to read him the script aloud.

“I’m listening to everything that’s in his mind so that I can understand that,” Cruise said. “Then I know how to contribute to it and bring that collaboration together.”

Iñárritu addressed Cruise’s “astonishing” transformation as well.

“I think we both know what it means to carry an entire career into a single moment like this,” the filmmaker said. “We both knew that throughout our journeys, we had never done anything even close to this.”

Digger hits theaters on October 2.
