Time to get theatrical! The nominations for the 2016 Tony Awards were announced on Tuesday, May 3, proving that (duh!) it’s Hamilton‘s year. The musical was nominated for 16 awards, the most in Broadway history.
The Lin-Manuel Miranda–created show, the biggest sensation on Broadway, received a nod in the Best Musical category. Other shows to make the list include Shuffle Along, Waitress, School of Rock: The Musical and Bright Star. (Hamilton was just awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.)
The 70th Annual Tony Awards, hosted by British comedian and late-night host James Corden, will be held at the Beacon Theatre in NYC on Sunday, June 12. Last year, the star-studded show took place at Radio City Music Hall.
“The Beacon Theatre has been home to two unforgettable Tony Award telecasts, and our team knows exactly how to put on a great show there,” Heather Hitchens, president of the American Theatre Wing, and Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League said in a previous press release. “We are delighted to bring the Tony Awards back to The Beacon for our 70th Anniversary on June 12th.”
