Woody and Bo Peep are likely going to be our favorite new couple come Toy Story 4’s release. Based on what John Lasseter, the chief creative officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, revealed at Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif., on Aug. 14, there’s more to Bo Peep than her sheep.
As previously reported, Toy Story 4 is a love story, but now we’re learning more about the pink bonnet-clad little lady who has flirted with Woody since the franchise’s 1995 debut.
“I love Bo Peep,” Lasseter told the crowd at the expo. “And we never got to know her backstory. She wasn’t in Toy Story 3 at all, so it really set us up nicely for her to come back. It’s a very special story.” For Lasseter, in particular. The Disney exec revealed that Bo Peep’s story is based off of his own wife Nancy’s life.
“Bo Peep really reminds me of my wife Nancy in many ways,” he explained, without giving too much detail away. “And my wife Nancy has an incredible emotional story, before I met her, so it’s a very personal story — as is every film at Pixar. But that’s what this one is for me. It’s a very touching story that’s inspired by my love for my wife.”
Lasseter is set to direct the film while Rashida Jones and Will McCormack will write the script. “If you’ve seen the film that [Jones and McCormack have] done, Celeste and Jesse Forever, there’s a special quality to the love story and the writing and the cleverness they have,” he added of the duo. “They’re great writers.”
The flick is special to Jones, too. "This is honestly a dream come true," she told Us of getting to work on the movie.
Bo Peep is voiced by Annie Potts. Tom Hanks, of course, voices Woody, while Tim Allen covers Buzz Lightyear. Toy Story 4 is due to hit theaters in June 2017.
