‘The Walking Dead’: How Those Season 7 Midseason Finale Deaths Change the Series

The body count on AMC’s The Walking Dead rose by two more in the season 7 midseason finale on Sunday, December 11, as Spencer (Austin Nichols) made a shameless attempt to ingratiate himself with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) by betraying Rick (Andrew Lincoln). Lesson learned: The one thing Negan hates more than disloyalty in his own ranks is disloyalty in someone else’s.

By the time the credits rolled on the midseason finale, Spencer’s intestines were on the wrong side of his epidermis, and Olivia (Ann Mahoney) was dead in the bargain, a casualty of Rosita’s failed assassination attempt on the bat-wielding villain. And while neither of these characters were core cast members, their deaths still change things.

Zombie America just lost its best dim-witted boy toy

Say what you will about Spencer’s incredibly stupid attempt to make nice with the murderous sociopath; dude was still hot and single, and strapping young men like him were already in short supply.

Whatever else happens, we predict the next half of the season will find Alexandria’s women significantly more sexually frustrated. But maybe that’s a good thing, because …

There’s a war coming

It doesn’t matter that Spencer was a traitorous douchebag; he was still One of Us, as far as Rick was concerned, and the one thing that always galvanizes Rick Grimes into action is losing his people.

Between Spencer’s disembowelment and the loss of his best babysitter (do you know how hard it is to find a decent nanny in a world infested by zombies?!), Rick has finally realized that serving the Saviors just isn’t a longterm viable option — even if it means some folks have to die. These deaths mean that a fight is coming, and it’s a fair bet that Spence and Olivia won’t be the last two casualties.

And gird your loins ’cause it’s gonna be chaos. No, not the coming showdown with Negan and the Saviors — we’re talking about the state of Alexandria’s pantry. Olivia was freakin’ magic at organizing, and now she’s gone. How will anyone find the powdered lemonade now?!

The Walking Dead returns to AMC Sunday, February 12, at 9 p.m. ET.
