Magic is possible! The hard evidence? This true-to-story Cinderella costume that transforms from rags to ball gown as its wearer twirls!
Cosplayer Bubbly Bee (aka Belinda Christie), who dresses up as various characters, wore the brown ensemble with a white apron that looked exactly like the animated princess’ “peasant” dress to FanX, a convention put on by Salt Lake Comic Con, in early January. Just by pulling a few well-placed strings and twirling, Christie releases the beautiful baby-blue ball gown that Cinderella is known for.
The intricate design, which Christie sewed herself, won Judges Choice during FanX’s cosplay contest. “I created the the pattern and sewed the dress myself, which took about two weeks of sewing but a month of planning,” Christie, who graduated from high school in June and is now studying costume design in college, tells Us Weekly. “I managed to finish the dress the day of the competition and the video was the second time of me ever doing the transformation.”
Why Cinderella? The expert sewer tells Us it was all for the enchantment. “I had just seen a French cosplay group dressed as Frozen do their own tear-away version of Elsa and I wanted to have a magical moment like that,” she says.
The Utah native can’t believe the excitement over the ensemble. “I’m still trying to process it all, because it still boggles my mind that it has gotten so popular! I never made it for that intention, I just wanted something cool for a contest and maybe a chance for a scholarship,” she tells Us. “It does make me happy to see the positive response. I started cosplay with the purpose of building a portfolio of what I was capable of, to gain experience, and build some sort of name for myself when it came to trying to find a job in costuming… I’m so grateful for the opportunity and kind responses.”
