After a “D” appeared on the board, Robert Santoli correctly guessed the phrase “Port & Starboard” with no other clues.

The 23-year-old, who graduated from Soundview Preparatory School, in Yorktown Heights, New York, in 2011, told local website Tapinto that prior to appearing on the show, he studied extensively.

“The instant I got my theme, I came up with an ever-growing list of puzzles themed towards cruises, sailing, fish, boats — anything on the water,” Santoli said. “As soon as I saw that ‘Places’ was the category, I had a hunch, and then I saw four blanks, an ampersand and nine blanks, and my face just lit up. My reflexes on that buzzer really show throughout the episode.”

Throughout the episode, host Pat Sajak would tease Santoli if it took him longer than a letter to answer correctly because he was on such a roll. He ended up winning all but one puzzle and took home the $76,000 jackpot. With the money, he plans on paying off his student loans and buying a car.

“I was shaking the whole time, first out of nervousness, then out of excitement, once I kept solving puzzles,” he told the site. “I got those same feelings when I finally watched the episode on TV. It feels weird seeing and hearing myself on a show that I’ve watched other strangers on for over 20 years.”
