The Night Agent will be embarking on its final mission — and a slew of dedicated fans are wondering why.

The Netflix thriller, based on the Matthew Quirk novel of the same name, follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Brasso) as he investigates a conspiracy that threatens the Oval Office.

The first season of the series was an unequivocal success, becoming the third most-viewed show on the streamer after its debut. It went on to reach number one in 87 countries.

Following the show’s global success, The Night Agent was renewed for a second and third season. Unfortunately, the series hit a reported plateau after season 3 and in May 2026, Netflix ultimately greenlit a fourth season while confirming it would be The Night Agent’s last.

Why Did Netflix Cancel ‘The Night Agent’?

The first season of The Night Agent performed well on Netflix, leading to an immediate renewal for season 2 and 3. However, viewership slowly declined during both follow-up seasons.

Deadline reported that data showed Netflix that there was interest amongst fans for another season of The Night Agent. As season 3 left many fans with a substantial amount of unanswered questions, the streamer ultimately decided to give the series one last season to conclude the story before pulling the plug.

What Did The Night Agent’s Creator Say About the Series’ End?

After it was announced that The Night Agent would be coming to a conclusion after season 4, creator and showrunner Shawn Ryan released a statement via Netflix.

“Ever since the initial success of The Night Agent, I’ve been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland’s journey,” Ryan wrote in May 2026. “I’m so grateful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for partnering with me on The Night Agent and for giving us the space to deliver a definitive final season to our worldwide legion of fans. We are hard at work to complete our story and to make our final season one our fans will never forget.”

Who Will Return — And Join — ‘The Night Agent’ Season 4?
