Being petite comes with its challenges, and finding flattering clothes is up there on my list of short-person struggles. At 5’0″, I’ve worn my fair share of oversized items and outfits that never fall quite right. However, through trial and error, I’ve discovered one piece that always makes me look longer and leaner: a V-neck dress.

V-neck dresses are great for petites, since showing that extra skin up top visually creates a vertical line and gives your upper half faux height. Paired with waistlines that hit just under the bust, or adjustable belts that can be fastened how you’d like, it’s easy to fake model proportions.

13 Elongating V-Neck Dresses for Petites

1. My Favorite: A V-neck wrap dress is the ultimate double whammy. While the neckline is already elongating, the side-tie makes it easy to adjust the waistline, so your bottom half looks miles long.

2. Runner-up: This flirty, flutter-sleeved option pulls off the same trick as the above, but since it’s a mini dress, it shows more leg, another detail that makes you appear taller.

3. Easy Illusion: I love the bright sunny color of this eyelet design, but more than that, I’m a fan of the high waistline. The detail gives the illusion that your legs are double their length.

4. Office Essential: Although it’s technically a button-down, this polished, printed wrap dress can be styled as a V-neck by unbuttoning the top. Between the adjustable neckline and the adjustable waist, it’s practically custom!

5. Expensive Look: This long silky dress reminds me of a Reformation design, but is a fraction of the price. Since there’s no waistline to break things up, you’ll appear tall at first glance.

6. Transitional Find: This printed dress is breezy enough for summer, but the long sleeves ensure it’s ready for fall. The smocked middle means it’s easy to adjust so it hits just right.

7. Wear-Anywhere: The versatility of this half-sleeve midi is unmatched. Whether you rock it for work or date night, it’ll flatter your petite frame, thanks to the high waist. Plus, it’s flowy enough to skim right over the tummy!

8. Lots of Spots: Stay on-trend with a polka-dotted wrap dress that checks every box. The side-tie design adds extra interest, and aside from faking height, the low-cut V-neck is subtly slimming.

9. Fancy Florals: I’ve been known to splurge on dresses for formal events, but with this luxe-looking maxi, there’s no need. Since it’s more of a column style, it creates a long, lean line. Paired with heels, you’ll look ready for the runway.

10. Line Up: The V-neckline and vertical stripes have the same effect, drawing the eye up and down so you look a tad taller.

11. Not-So-BasicAlthough the design is somewhat simple, this floral V-neck dress is also a halter, so it plays with proportions while framing and elongating the upper body.

12. Everyday Option: Skip the boxy T-shirt dress — this babydoll alternative is just as easy, but visually makes you look longer.

13. Belted Beauty: Featuring a notched neck and a belt you can tie higher or lower, this chic, elongating midi dress is a smart choice. Plus, the artsy floral print gives it a fancy boutique vibe.
